CompareTheSolicitor.com was the brainchild of Managing Director, Damian Hateley. Having been a Director of a Legal Costs Auditing firm encountering daily the horror stories of solicitor excessive costs claims and potential negligence, he believed that a change was not only necessary but essential.

To change the way the public views and uses the legal profession and solicitors in general is paramount. The Legal Costs firm has dealt with nearly a billion pounds worth of solicitors costs and saved clients hundreds of millions of pounds. More to the point, the hundreds of millions of pounds shouldn't have been charged by the unreasonable solicitors in the first place.

The horror stories are wide ranging from solicitors acting on case types that are not an area of their expertise, to them not acting in the best interest of the clients and in too many cases they had in fact acted negligently. A recent example, of one such firms case was were our client had a dispute over a £1,200 Bill for maintenance at their property.The solicitor was instructed to act on our clients behalf. For investigating the matter and taking it to court the firm of solicitors charged the client £115,000 (without any update to the client of what the costs where going to be). Along with the extraordinarily disproportionate and unreasonable costs, there was suspected negligence in several areas. The matter is now proceeding to complaint with the Solicitors Regulation Authority. One other thing to also bear in mind with this case is that the client found that the solicitor in charge of the case was being pressured by his senior boss to invoice as much as he possibly could......and was getting paid bonuses to do so.

With all of this in mind it was time to take our knowledge and expertise to the door of legal users. Rather than waiting until the mistakes had been made and doing a damage limitation exercise at the end of the case, we felt it was of much greater value to point clients to the reasonable and relaible firms of lawyers from the outset.
